You have big ambitions.

And then you have your standards… the level at which you’re willing to operate to earn a living, etc.

But answer me this: Are your current standards leading to the fulfillment of those big ambitions?

I hope you said yes. I bet most people said no.

So overcoming that gap is what today’s #TomFerryShow is about… 3 ways to raise the bar on your standards so you can achieve what you really want in life.

And it all boils down to one word: Accountability.

I’ve got three ways you can add the accountability you need to achieve your goals!

Let’s dig in!

Accountability Hack No. 1: Get Your Goals Up & Visual

What happens when you create a goal but you don’t tell anyone?

Nothing! There are no consequences. Only you knew about it, and you might’ve sorta doubted yourself anyway, and you obviously weren’t fully committed because you didn’t take action… so there’s very little pain associated with failing to achieve that goal. You simply move on.

Accountability is about creating that painful consequence.

And one of the easiest ways to do it is to make your goals visible to the world.

When you put your goals “up and visual,” you’re announcing your intentions to people who matter most to you – family, friends, colleagues and even strangers.

And by doing so, suddenly you’ve created a consequence because you don’t want to look like a failure in the eyes of these important people in your life.

To make this approach even stronger, post a sign next to your scoreboard that says something to the effect of, “Ask me about my 90-day cycle.”

Then see how much more action you’ll take as a result of this bold declaration.

Accountability Hack No. 2: Enroll Others in Your Goals

Unless you live in the remote Alaskan wilderness, chances are there are people in your life who you see on a regular basis. People like…

  • Your manager
  • Your mentor
  • Your team leader
  • Your friends
  • Your significant other
  • Your family members

A simple ask can include these people in your efforts to achieve your goals.

Let me make this clear: I’m not saying you have to recruit these people to pursue your goal with you. You just need to declare your intentions to them and ask them to hold you accountable. Like this:

“Hey, do me a favor… Every time you see me, ask me how I’m doing on [your goal here].”

Or this:

“I’m committed to [your goal here]. Whenever you see me, do me a favor and give me a little push or encouragement. Thanks.”

They’ll be honored that you’ve included them, and they’ll probably take pride in playing their small role in it.

Accountability Hack No. 3: Put Your Booty on the Line!

What makes you cringe?

Wearing ugly clothes you’d never choose in a million years?

Contributing to a political candidate you despise?

Eating an entire can of cat food at a fancy restaurant… while your friends enjoy their delicious meals?

Any of these can provide strong motivation as long as you are part of a group who will hold you accountable to the consequence if you don’t do what you’ve committed to.

So let your imagination run wild and come up with those things you’d never want to do, and use your desire to avoid it to spur you into massive action.

Give the authority to your coach or your manager or your peer group to hold you accountable to these actions – or they’ll force you to suffer the consequences.

So… Which one will you choose? Want my suggestion? Do all three, and watch your productivity skyrocket. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
